Year 2010 has just begun with the schools opening very soon, and what a better way to spread some love and joy to the less privileged. Under the planning of Officer Cadet Arvinthan Venugopal, 6 Indian Cadets from the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDU) made a charity visit to the Pusat Jagaan Anbe Sivam in Klang.
The arrangement of this visit was brought into the picture about 3 months prior to the event date. It’s amazing how things fell into place and how generous some people are in terms of their contributions, either in cash or time or both! We managed to collect approximately RM2000 in funds. As the project manager, Cadet Arvin did a splendid job in prepping up this event. He was assisted by his mom who actually suggested us to this home. They both did the running around in purchasing the items needed. A week before the event, we visited the home to discuss on the items needed and also the suitable date for the big day.
This home is located opposite the Klang General Hospital and has been operating for the past 14 years. It is a bungalow house with four rooms, a dining area and study area. This home was started by Mr. and Mrs. K. Muthurajah to help the underprivileged ones like down syndrome, spastic, slow learners, orphan, deaf, dumb and also oldies. According to Mr. Muthu, the main objective is to get these special kids to stand on their own legs in the future by acquiring vocational skills in order to lead a better life. The home has around 54 occupants with their age ranging from 1 to 88 years old. They even have single mothers who stay in and also help out in the daily work.
Financial contributions enabled us to buy toiletries, provisions, school bags, books and many more items. Some also donated old clothing. All the items provided are aimed at either providing a better sense of living, promoting closeness and working and playing together and most importantly to know that the society in general is wishing them well and is looking out for them.
ITEMS TO BE DONATED |
Our group arrived at the home approximately around 11.00am on the 3rd January 2010. We were greeted by Mr. Muthu and also the kids. I myself was very impressed with how well-behaved they are and I could tell that they really enjoyed people visiting them at their home. Their welcome made us feel right at home, treating us as one of them rather than a stranger to their home. We were literally “brothers and sisters”.
We were given a short briefing by Mr. Muthu about the home and after which we started our activity. We distributed goodies like school bags, art blocks, books, stationary and also provisions. They were indeed very happy to receive them.
We were also given a certificate of appreciation by Mr. Muthu for our contribution to the home.
